Grand Romance

Joel Bush

Perhaps you’ve heard of
the lovers of Pompeii,
their embrace preserved
for centuries in magma.
How enticing to think that our love
could survive nature’s furnace.
I’m sorry to disappoint.
In the event of a house fire some night,
I’d shake you awake
even if I thought our charred bones
might look cute together.
The heat of your body
is enough for me.
